One more update to character creator sheet.
I am working on HM sheet as the preorder pdf of the PHB is now available.

Hackmaster Basic Character creation assistant
I got the first version of Hackmaster Character creation assistant ready. Creating a new HMB character requires quite a lot of bookkeeping with Building Points so I spent some time create my own little helper for that. One of my motives was to easily create some premade characters for new players that I might succeed to lure into playing HMB.
Please try out my work and feel free to comment it and point out any errors or flaws you find out. There is undoubtedly some of them still around since I’ve become a little blind for all the details after working with it for a while now.
The actual thing itself is an Excel sheet.
Edit: I already made some small corrections to formatting of the sheet and clearing some presets left from testing.

Santa is coming tomorrow
Well it’s been a while again since posting here. It’s been a busy year on all other things than gaming unfortunately. Mom passing away in the spring and then the storm in autumn on top of all the usual chores. It took me most of the autumn to chop those ten fallen trees into a firewood after my normal office hours. Ever shortening daytime didn’t help that much either. But it was finally done before the snow came in.
My friends also got me sucked in to the Flames of War WWII miniatures game. I have never been very interested about War Hammer or 40K or games like that. My opinion is that they are overpriced and the more you spend on your army the better chances you have to succeed. That is does not go well with my ideas that gaming should be fair and equal to all players resourcewise and the skill defines if you succeed or not. With miniatures you have to amass a hefty collection to have a flexible army to fight against different types of enemies in a different types of terrain. If you buy a single copy of some good old boardgame like Combat Commander, you get all that for several nations in one box without any need to invest more and more to your army. That is still my opinion even though I have my US army for FoW now with enough flexibility for most of the different scenarios. I don’t even value the game itself very high as a proper WWII simulation compared to my any game in my boardgame collection either. The rulebook is very badly organized and the rules themselves don’t seem very intuitive to me but that may be because of my background with ‘meatier’ games. But if I close one of my eyes and don’t demand too much from the system it is fun enough and with good friends to play with it is worth the invested money and time after all.
On the more heavier side I got a bunch of new games during the last few months from GMT games also. Sword of Rome deluxe reprint finally emerged from the printers and then GMT had their usual Fall Sales and I got 1 discount game for each preorder I had made earlier this year so I got Twilight Struggle deluxe edition, Fast Action Battles: the Bulge, Normandy ’44 and Monmouth for half price. Now that’s a lot of games in one time (SoR also arrived shortly before these four discount games) so I have only had a chance to try out FAB: the Bulge so far on the table and I really like it. Can’t wait to get those other games on the table too.
But now it’s time to wish you all happy holidays and a propserous year 2011!

Storm swept over the yard and gaming house
Last Sunday an immense storm swept over our house and the yard. Downburst preceeding the thunder front fell ten big trees from our own yard and a couple of more from the neighbour’s side. Two of the trees also hit the old house I use as my gaming room and my wife has her working room there too. Fortunately it was late night and there was no one at the building at that time. Here are some pictures of the destruction. The house survived the tree hits surprisingly well.
Something’s stirring in the darkness
I have been away for quite sometime. My mother passed away in February. It took a while to deal with all the feelings of losing the only parent you had alive, even though she had been withering away for a long time already due to a Parkinson’s disease. Dying also leaves a lot of paperwork for those staying alive… At the same time our regular roleplaying group went also on hiatus because of mismatching schedules. So it has been very quiet here for a long time.
Lately I have managed to play quite a few scenarios of Combat Commander: Mediterranean though. I really like the system of Combat Commander. The game really reflects the chaos of the battlefield nicely with random events and the aspect of hand management of your fate deck. I’ll probably get to play another session in a few days and make an after action report of that.
So I believe this blog will crawl out of darkness soon…

Hackmaster Basic Errata
Hackmaster Basic rules just got a very well organised errata at the Kenzer Forums. They have also the rules available as PDF with errata included. I am trying to resist purchasing the PDF though since I already have the original dead tree format of the rules and I probably won’t have a good chance to actually play the game until the Advanced Hackmaster rules are available.
Mastering the HMB character
Happy new year everyone! Well it’s better late than never as they say. Our gaming group has been on extended holiday season hiatus and so has this blog also but now it’s time to finish the creation of that elven thief for Hackmaster Basic system.
A short but hopefully interesting background story for him is here. Read more…
Time for pagan traditions
It’s been a busy month both in gaming and real life too.
RPGs
Our 4e campaign has been marching on quite steadily. My cleric just reached the 6th level. I still have some doubts about the 4e system as anything else but miniature wargame. The more I read about Hackmaster though the more convinced I become, of it being the game for me. But gaming for me is after all about meeting friends and having a good time so I can bear gaming with 4e rule set too.
Boardgames
I have not had much time to play face to face boardgames this month but I have been closely involved with playtesting Ed Beach’s upcoming game The Virgin Queen. It’s a sequel to his wonderful history lesson Here I Stand. So far it has been very interesting experience and the game itself is perhaps even more diabolical struggle between diplomacy, military and religious powers. I am very excited about the game.
But now it is soon time to celebrate some age old pagan ceremonies that are veiled in christian shrouds these days. And most importantly enjoy the excitement and happiness glowing on the kids’ faces
Merry Christmas!
I’ll return to Hackmaster after Christmas…
